  • Wild throw gives Red Sox the edge over Cubs in extras at Wrigley

Patrick Wisdom’s 450-foot, eighth-inning home run put the Cubs in position to sweep Boston on Sunday at Wrigley Field, but the Red Sox prevailed 4-2 thanks to pitcher Rowan Wick’s wild throw to first base in the 11th inning.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Wick charged in to field a slow roller by Boston’s Trevor Story. Wick set and fired, but the ball sailed well over David Bote’s head, and Bobby Dalbec and Christian Arroyo raced home.

The Cubs had a chance in the 11th after Nelson Velazquez walked with one out to put runners on first and second, but Christopher Morel struck out looking on an 84-mph slider on a 3-2 count; and pinch-hitter Narcisco Crook struck out swinging.

Wisdom’s HR came one pitch after a high offering zipped by his head. He then unloaded on a 95-mph sinker from Matt Strahm and sent it sailing into the left-field bleachers to tie the game at 2-2.

Wisdom now has 45 homers in 181 games since the start of last season.

The Cubs (32-47) had a four-game winning streak snapped. The teams combined for 20 hits in a game that lasted 4 hours, 25 minutes.

Cubs starter Keegan Thompson allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings. Five of the hits never left the infield.

Boston got its runs in the fourth inning, thanks in large part to Cubs second baseman Christopher Morel losing a pop-up in the sun with runners on first and second. The ball ended up bouncing off Anthony Rivas’ glove for a single and going for an RBI single. The Red Sox got their other run when Thompson walked Jarren Duran three batters later.

Manager David Ross tried a double steal with Willson Contreras and Rafael Ortega with one out in the seventh. Contreras was thrown out at second because his left foot came off the bag as SS Xander Bogaerts applied the tag to the right foot.

It was an interesting call by Ross, who is in his third season behind the bench. Beforehand, he was asked about how much more comfortable he is now in making in-game strategy decisions.
